Eastern Box Turtle

Chers Amis,

Did you make a guess about our mystery eye? Theresa was right!  The ruby eye belongs to “Lionhearted” a male Eastern Box Turtle.  How dimg_1560o we know it is a he? By the vibrant red eye color and his concave plastron.  Caddie found him crossing the road in front of our house Sunday. We (especially Caddie) are quite passionate about the turtles on our property and carefully photograph, identify, catalogue, and name every turtle, every time they ‘come to visit’. While trying to determine if this newest gentleman was a returning guest, we discovered that we have identified twelve different individual Eastern Box Turtles since we started in 2007.  On the right is another tiny turtle we found last summer.  img_0587We believe it is a female, but wonder if we will be able to use her scute patters for future identification since she was so young when we took this picture.  We named her ‘Valentine’ as her center scutes are heart-shapted when seen from above. Adorable. If ou are interested in Eastern Box turtles, here is a link to a post with much more information on nature study of Shelled Wonders. Off to the library!

what a sweet valentine! i love turtles. my father used to have them as pets when he was a child, but i know they are a little bit delicate-hence the reason we’ve never had one. i prefer hearty animals because we get so attached and if something happens, well, you know……..it’s not easy!

I adore your nature posts, the photos are so amazing!
Your turtle love reminds me of a book I read as a girl which featured a very old turtle, I think it was Gone Away Lake. Have you read it? Did I remember right? I think there is a sequel as well…
