Remembering Lepanto for the first time

October 9, 2008

Chers Amis,

Total hat tip to Jennifer at S/V Mario Hal-O-Jen for a moving collection of links to an a capella chanted version of G.K. Chesterton's epic poem "Lepanto."  Honestly, I had heard the naval Battle of Lepanto mentioned as one of the most important battles in history, especially to Europe and Christendom, but I never followed up on it or read Chesterton's work.  If you are in the same boat (bad pun alert), read this article, "Remembering Lepanto" by Michael Novak in National Review for background (pay attention to the referenes to Don Quixote/Cervantes).  Then,  open this link to the text of "Lepanto" and read the lyrics while listening to the chanted version.  It is stirring.  Tonight, say a rosary of gratitude to Our  Lady of Victory.
