A Campfire Birthday

June 1, 2008

 Chers Amis,

This week Scarlett turned 10. She is officially a member of the double digit club. In celebration, we had a  backyard camp-out themedCampfire cake fete complete with tent, sleeping bags, a dip in the swimming hole (AKA dh's hot tub) and even cake and ice cream despite Thursday's somewhat disastrous gateau gaff I had planned to make this cake with a wonderful devil's food recipe instead of brownies, but had to change gears. What does the old adage say? "When life hands you lemons make lemonade." Well, when the cake crumbles make a trifle!

After we IMG_0169soothed Pippin who was mourning for the lost dessert, Scarlett and I used a few toothpicks to resurrect the least damaged layer, applied a thin coat of chocolate caulk frosting, and froze the 'top' while we cubed the remaining cake debris. This we layered with fresh strawberries, whipped cream and chocolate pudding in a deep dish glass casserole.  We removed the top from the freezer, applied another coat of frosting and added a campfire ring of milk chocolate rocks we had discovered at Wmart.  We like them much better than the walnuts in the original recipe! We carefully topped the trifle with the decorated layer and added Twix logs and orange and red M&M and mini-marshmallow embers. Since I had no red or yellow cellophane, I made a very rustic tissue paper and vellum flame, et voila!  One delicious wreak of a cake!
