Just one more chapter, please?

May 22, 2008

Chers Amis,

This is Caddie after prayers, after lights out, after cuddles, sneaking a few last rays of sunlight to read.  It is almost 9 PM, but the siren setting sun is still beguiling, tempting little girls to crack open the blinds for just one more chapter .  No need for flashlights under the covers on a late spring evening.  Doesn't it  call to mind that classic Robert Louis Stevenson Poem?

Bed in Summer

by Robert Louis Stevenson
In winter I get up at night

And dress by yellow candle-light.

In summer quite the other way,

I have to go to bed by day.

I have to go to bed and see

The birds still hopping on the tree,

Or hear the grown-up people's feet

Still going past me in the street.

And does it not seem hard to you,

When all the sky is clear and blue,

And I should like so much to play,

To have to go to bed by day?

    How sweet!
And that is one of my all-time favorite poems.
