A Happy Spring Peeper

May 19, 2008

Chers Amis,

How about this happy face!  Scarlett spotted  "Happy" a Northern Cricket Frog resting in the new soft grass along our front walk.  He was so tiny, perhaps only an inch long, but so photogenic:-) According to  this  article at the Hilton Pond center  their call is often  compared to  that of a cricket or insect and the Latin name Acris crepitans means "clattering locust."   It has been so cool and lovely of late that we’ve been sleeping with the windows open to hear the rain – and the frogs.  I had been wondering who was singing as the voices were too high to be our familiar friend "Croakie" the Copes gray tree frog and too early to be cicada or katydid. Et voila! Our little chanteur. Il est mignon, non?

Sometimes, their call can be deafening where I live, but it’s home. I will always remember the reverberation of these peepers fondly, I actually look forward to them.
